I would recommend this resort- nice size (not too big) and it is well-maintained with tons of staff members to assist you with anything you need. I think it was renovated within the last 5 years. The rooms were great - nice size (we even had a Venetian Premium- one of the least expensive rooms). They offer turn-down service which was a nice suprise.
Our first morning we took the property tour (offered twice per day), glad we did because while it is not a big resort you will probably miss out on some of the amenities if you don't know they exisit! We found out there was a hot tub near the spa that no one ever used- we had it to ourselves the whole trip. They also have saunas and steam rooms in the same area that were never in use by other guests.
The food was good- while it will not be the best gourmet meal of your life, it's certainly better than TGIFridays or any of the large chain restaurants in US. Kimonos was a nice experience because we got to know the other guests. Make your reservations when you wake up so you can get the time you want. The bartenders were wonderful, very entertaining and generous with the booze (good chocolate martinis). Mondays they have a buffet on the beach with several choices of food (and tons of desserts!). The Italian restaurant was also open, in case you don't like what they offer in the buffet. Breakfast buffet was good- omelets made ot order, fresh fruit, pastries, etc. Let's just say I came back 10 pounds heavier!
We did the Dunns River Falls excursion, it was great- so much fun! The guides were friendly and made sure you had a good time, stayed safe and came home with great pictures. Water shoes are necessary, they cost about $18 in the gift shop (and are ugly!), so bring your own from home. You may want to buy your own waterproof camera at home to save $. There were some older women who weren't too happy about how much effort it took to climb the falls- it's not an easy hike so if you are out of shape it may be a bit of a workout for you! (but well worth it!)
The activities, such as snorkleing, glass-bottom boat, fill up quickly, so sign up for those right after you wake up to get your choice of times. We found the watersports guys who help with the windsurfing and Hobie-Cats to be very lazy- they were always telling us the water was too rough to go out, then they would go take a nap in the shade. You may have to stay on them if you want to go out. The beach was never crowded, most people were in the pools. While it's not a huge beach, it was plenty of room for us and were always able to get beach chairs. I heard that it was hard to get a pool raft in the mornings- but it's Jamaica- go in the ocean! I will say that the only snorkeling you can do is if you take the boat out to the reef.
The one negative was the late night noise we experienced our first night. This was partly due to us wanting to go to sleep at 11 pm because we had been up early to catch our flight to the island. We had a room overlooking the pools and ocean, and it was loud at night due to the bars being open until 3am. We requested to be switched to the other side of the hall and didn't have any other problems with noise after that. The staff was very professional about the room change- they actually called us the next morning and told us our new room number, then sent a bellman to take our bags across the hall. We really appreciated their service and it turned a negative into a positive.
I would like to say that while the bus ride was 1 1/2 - 2 hours from Montego Bay Airport, the driver was so entertaining that we didn't mind too much. It was nice to see the country, he pointed out all the landmarks and we were able to ask him any questions we had.
Also, some other couples had gone to the Ocho Rios Sandals and they said the Dunns River was much nicer. I also overheard a couple in the lobby saying they were staying at OR and asked to be switched to DR. The Montego Bay Sandals is right next to the airport, so if you are taking a short weekend getaway that might be a good option. I am not sure if there was a lot of noise or not since we didn't go there.
All in all, it was a great trip and we will definitely stay at a Sandals again.
