We stayed at Breezes June 28 through July 6 for our honeymoon. We arrived at Sangster on Saturday evening, went straight to the Superclubs desk, and were on our way to Breezes within 15 minutes. After surviving one of the most insane (but exciting) bus rides ever, we were warmly greeted by the bellman, given a nice frozen cocktail and shown to our room.
SUMMARY-Overall we had a great time. The weather treated us well. The grounds, the pools, and the beach were all incredible. The not so good....our room was constanly damp with no ventilation (and had mosquitos), the staff would rather have been anywhere but there, and the food was not good. Breezes is okay and has the superior beach, but Hedonism 3 is much more fun and guests/staff are much friendlier. Next time, we probably won't do an all-inclusive because most of the things we wanted to do were not included and we didn't eat, drink, snorkel or use enough of the other "inclusive" amenities to make up the price difference versus a standard resort. If you are a moderate or nondrinker who wants good service when you need it, and mostly just want to relax at the beach or in the pool, a non-inclusive will save you some $$. Read on for more details....
POOLS- they were great- especially the cascading pool with ocean view, but they all closed at 6:30 and the swim up bar closed even earlier than that. Another issue was beach towel service. We were given one card each to exchange for beach towels. If we didn't have the cards at checkout, we get charged a $40 fee. After the first towel exchange there were no clean towels, or no attendent around, which meant we couldn't get clean towels or our stupid cards so we were stuck with wet dirty towels until checkout.
FOOD- I'm not particular and usually eat anything that doesn't eat me first, but the food at Breezes was just not up to par. Presentation was great, but what really matters to me is the taste, and even high quality Jamaican ganja from the nice "seashell salesman" at the beach couldn't help in this area. The exception would be the Starlight Grill and the Japanese restaurant- good food and pretty good service at both . The Italian restaurant was heavy on ambiance, service, & presentation but once again, lousy food. My steak was cooked correctly in the center but burned to a crisp on the outside. It was served with a tablespoon of mashed potatoes and 2 or 3 green beans. I don't recall what my wife had, but it wasn't much better.
By far, the worst restaurant was the buffet. Not only was the food not good and the same thing everyday, the service was horrible. We watched our food get cold many times awaiting someone to bring our utensils. Once we were even asked to get up and move from a clean table to a dirty table six feet away that someone had just vacated. The alternative for lunch is the Reggae Cafe. The jerk chicken is usually good (if you can get a piece with some meat on it), but the fries are not etible and the jerk pork is about 98% fat. Service wasn't great there either.
STAFF- Although I somewhat understand since they don't work for tips, the food servers, bartenders, and watersports attendants seemed to hate their job/lives.. My main drink was a Pina Colada, which was easy for the bartenders since they're pre-made in the machine, but they would just put the slush in a cup and then dump Appleton on top of it. I had to mix them all myself....not a big deal for one or two, but it got to be an annoyance by day 3 or 4.
My wife isn't a regular smoker but bought a pack for the heck of it. She only smoked one or two and left the rest in our room. Over the course of the week she noticed that the housekeeping person would steal 3 or 4 each time she made our room. We thought it was funny, but it also worried us a bit.
ROOM- We stayed in one of the so-called deluxe rooms, ground floor with a patio. It was not convenient to come & go through the main door, so we mostly used the sliding glass patio door. This was ok but doing so meant leaving our room unlocked. The safe broke twice, but to Breezes credit, someone came to fix it within 30 minutes each time. The alarm clock had some missing segments that made reading the minutes impossible and it was insanely complicated to set the alarm.
The bed was of average comfort and my request for an extra pillow was met immediately. One suggestion would be that they buy some fitted sheets! I woke up dozens of times lying on bare mattress (yuck!). My biggest complaint about the room is that it was very mildewy, causing our clothes/bedding to be constantly damp. Outside the room, I never saw an insect (even in the pristine jungle area), but inside there were huge mosquitos that waited until I was asleep to chew up my head and arms.
ACTIVITIES- We only participated in a couple of the activities and watched a few others, but most of them were pretty lame. Not all Breezes fault though, since there just were not a lot guests to participate. Being underbooked was a double-edged sword. On one hand it was good because there wasn't a lot of waiting and we always got same day reservations. On the other, there were a lot of locals allowed in. I'm not sure if they purchased day passes or were friends and family of the staff, but for the most part they were completely unfriendly bordering on rude.
MUSIC- Most of the music was awful, whether pumping through the sound system or being played by the house band. The reggae was not bad, but inexplicably there was not very much of it. It was mostly hip-hop and occasionally something jazzy. The majority of the guests were 30-50 year old white people, who overwhelmingly do not care for these genres. It seemed like they were playing music for the staff, rather than the guests.
CHECKING OUT- Another all-inclusive pitfall....We were told to have our bags ready for pickup at 9AM Sunday and that the bus would leave for Sangster at 10AM......ok except our flight wasn't until 2 PM and the airport is only an hour away, with minimal security. I would have rather spent the extra 2-4 hours on the beach and paid for a taxi to get us there closer to our departure time.
