We just returned from a great, incredibly relaxing week in Acapulco. My husband and I have travelled to several parts of Mexico, and we never knew anyone who recently went to Acapulco, so we didn't know what to expect. A friend gave us a week on an RCI exchange as a gift, so we jumped at the chance to check out the Grand Mayan and Acapulco.
We were in a 1 Bedroom, and it was very nice and spacious. Jacuzzi in bedroom, dipping pool on huge balcony, 2 seperate sink areas - my stuff was spread out everywhere! Cleaning staff did an immaculate job, and it made it very hard to leave the room! Which is probably why we loved the room service. We've never been "hotel eaters". We enjoy venturing out and experiencing local restaurants, getting away from the tourist traps. But we were so relaxed, we took advantage of room service! It was actually much cheaper than normal room service, and was a nice alternative when we felt like staying in our pj's and relaxing in our little private pool.
As other reviewers have mentioned, the hotel is about 20 minutes from the downtown. I would definitely like to experience Acapulco staying in the middle of it all. But the Diamonte district is being developed on many levels, and I think Acapulco will be a different city in a couple of years. Not sure if that's good or bad. But with the distance from town, you also get a quiet relaxation. Beach is beautiful. We loved being there in June. We've been to Mexico in the past in June, so we know how the rain comes and goes. One day, it rained all day, but only one. And we didn't mind. It has the benefits of a half empty resort. There were tons of pool chairs available, every restaurant we visited was practically empty and the bargains are even better at the markets!
Our favorite restaurant was La Tortuga - our waiter was amazing. They totally took care of us, and the food was sooo yummy. We also enjoyed La Cosa Nostra, in the neighborhood near the hotel - it's Italian and was pretty good. Our driver was Robert Alarcon, and we loved him. When he was busy with other clients, one of his other drivers, Alberto took us around. Alberto was also awesome. But Roberto was class act all the way. The day before we left for Acapulco, I found some old, mixed reviews about him. Not sure if that's what made him change, but all recent reviews are spot on. We had nothing but a stellar experience with him. Our City Tour was incredible - we finally felt like we understood the layout of the city, and just skimmed the surface of starting to feel the personality of Acapulco. Cliff divers were very cool as well. And whether it was getting us a great table at a restaurant, showing us the best stalls to visit at the market, or understanding if we cancelled plans, Roberto was great. On our last day, we needed a personal issue dealt with, and with only a bit over an hour before our departure flight, Roberto gladly carried out our needs. He was truly a lifesaver, and he made our trip an easy one. I would never return to Acapulco without his services.
Word to the wise: if you go to the Mayan timeshare presentation, make sure and research them on the internet - both the Mayan and their new timeshare partner, HSI. We were almost swayed by the allure of Mexico, and I'm sure it's not all bad,.. but I'm just saying - do your research!
Overall, loved Mexico, love the silver, I'm dreaming of frijoles and guac and onions, and the Grand Mayan was a great home base. Although our hearts will always belong to Zihuatanejo, we'll definitely return to Acapulco in the future, and would surely consider the Grand Mayan.
