Aswan is a fairly safe place to visit.  Having said this, there are certain precautions that should be taken in order to ensure a smooth trip through the southern region of Egypt.  Like always, common sense is the most important tool to be used in staying safe. 

            Although it is not a major concern at the moment, over the past three years, a few terrorist attacks have occurred in public areas.  Make sure to keep up on the political and social situation in Egypt before planning a trip.

            Avoid walking alone at night (especially women).  If staying with a group is not an option and walking is unavoidable, try to remain in lighted, public areas.

            Although street crime, burglaries, and petty theft are not major concerns in Aswan, they occasionally happen.  However, most of these situations can be avoided using a few simple rules.  Avoid carrying around large amounts of money or looking extremely flashy.  Drawing un-needed attention is never a good idea.  Lock all car doors and roll up windows when leaving valuables behind in a car.  Pickpockets have been known to hit unsuspecting tourists in crowded, public area; so be aware. 

            There are certain diseases and illnesses that can be dangerous in Aswan.  Make sure to consult a doctor a few months before departing to ensure having gotten the proper vaccinations and immunizations.
